Survey Shows Parents and Teachers Agree: More Technology, Please

in technology

According to a recent survey by the Learning Education by Advancing Digital Commission, both teachers and parents want a greater emphasis on technology in the classroom. Additionally, both groups see technology will grow to be more important in the next ten years.

What does more technology in the classroom look like? How should technology be implemented to make it enhance education rather than distract students from learning? Is there a systemic change happening to make sure that the changes are deeper than using a white board to show a power point rather than using a projector?

Today 70% of children between the ages of 2-5 can operate a computer mouse, but only 11% of them can tie their own shoes. At the start of the 21st century only half of all school classrooms had Internet access, compared to 98% today.

Technology in the Classroom Shouldn’t be a Struggle

in integration, technology

The Gazette of Eastern Iowa recently had an excellent article: “Adoption of technology in education is slow and uneven.” Three primary challenges were highlighted, including the lack of strategy, funding woes and resistance.

The struggle was simply stated by a senior at one Iowa school:

Before school, Adam Canady will check the weather using his iPhone. After school, he’ll use a computer to do homework. During school, however, those devices are often put away.

While some of the 18-year-old senior’s classes at Iowa City West High School incorporate technology, it’s a lot less prevalent than in his life outside school.
